How Infection Starts and Shows Itself
Infection begins with a zombie grapple. Your infection chance rises as your health falls, and losing the grapple minigame or being grabbed with no stamina causes infection. Preserve stamina when zombies are close so you still have a way to escape.
The first phase is incubation, which has no visible sign. Onset follows with coughing that nearby Responders can hear. Visual sensitivity and audio distortion then grow more severe. Treat the first cough as a change of mission priority, because waiting for the strongest symptoms leaves less room to find treatment.
Choose the Right Infection Treatment
The two treatments solve different problems:
| Treatment | Immediate effect | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Phalanx Pills | Reset infection progress without curing it | Buy time to reach extraction or continue searching |
| Gene Therapy | Creates an antivirus that completely cures infection | Save the Responder when the rare device is available |
Gene Therapy is found in the map, can be used once, and takes 30 seconds after drawing blood to produce the cure. Secure the area before starting it. Phalanx Pills can be used even late in the infection, but the virus remains and its progress can begin again.
Reduce Infection Risk Before a Grab
- Keep enough stamina to escape a grapple instead of spending the full bar on sprinting or melee.
- Restore health before entering another dense area, because lower health increases infection risk.
- Maintain space around corners and doorways so one zombie cannot pin you while another blocks the exit.
- Consider the Antibodies skill for a Responder intended for dangerous runs. It reduces infection chance by 50 percent.
- Tell nearby teammates when a Shambler gas cloud or tight horde makes a route unsafe.
When You Cannot Reach a Cure
Use pills first if they can create enough time to reach a known extraction or treatment opportunity. Tell your group what is happening so they can change pace, cover the route, and avoid clustering around you.
If the infection reaches its final stage and there is no treatment path, Self-Sacrifice prevents the Responder from turning into another threat to the group. It ends the run and the character, so reserve it for containment after the realistic treatment and escape options are gone.
