How to Start Solo Mode

Open the game-mode selection screen, choose Solo, select the map and difficulty you want to practice, then deploy with the Responder and loadout you want to test. Solo is available across the game's maps, so you can rehearse an Objective route, learn a Survival layout, or check how a build handles before taking it into a live squad.

Solo removes traditional progression and permadeath. A failed run will not erase the Responder you brought, and a successful run will not advance that Responder through the normal character progression loop. Treat it as a rehearsal room for your next live run.

Solo, Offline Play, and Private Lobbies

On PC, Solo maps run natively on the local machine instead of the standard multiplayer servers. Steam also marks single-player as not requiring internet. Store sign-in and license behavior still follows the platform where you own the game.

A private lobby remains a live cooperative mission with the normal mission stakes. Solo gives you a map to yourself and removes persistent character growth and loss. Use a private lobby when you want controlled practice with friends and meaningful progression. Use Solo when you want unlimited attempts without placing a developed Responder at risk.

A Reliable Solo Route Plan

Do not try to clear every room. Your first goal is to understand the route between the spawn, the next required objective, a useful loot stop, and a defensible fallback position.

  1. Read the objective and identify the shortest safe approach before fighting.
  2. Keep one open retreat lane whenever you enter a building or objective area.
  3. Take healing first, then ammunition that matches the firearm you are actually carrying.
  4. Use quiet melee attacks on isolated zombies and save firearm ammunition for runners, specials, and forced holdouts.
  5. After completing an objective, pause long enough to check health, infection, ammunition, and the next route.

Objectives scale with the remaining player count when they begin, which makes Solo practical for route learning. The horde can still punish noise and poor positioning, so reduce the number of directions from which zombies can reach you.

What to Practice Before Playing Co-op

Run the same map with one specific purpose at a time:

Practice runWhat to learn
Route runObjective order, locked passages, shortcuts, and fallback rooms
Supply runReliable healing, ammunition, and tool locations along the objective path
Combat runMelee spacing, firearm recoil, attachment effects, and escape timing
Build runWhether the starting gear and skills solve the role you intend to play

Once you can reach each major objective without getting trapped, move to a live mission. Cooperation changes the horde pressure and resource decisions, but the route knowledge carries over.
